Volunteering at Yu-Ai Kai

Thank you for considering Yu-Ai Kai as a place to volunteer your time and talents, and to augment our service to the senior community.

A nonprofit organization, like Yu-Ai Kai, cannot operate to its fullest potential without the support of volunteers.

Please contact Derek Ives for more information about Volunteer Opportunities at Yu-Ai Kai/Akiyama: dives@yuaikai.org or (408) 294-2505 ext. 12

Volunteers are needed for:

  • The Senior Day Services program is a community based group Adult Day Care Program designed to meet the needs of adults with functional limitations at Yu-Ai Kai. As a volunteer, you would assist the trained staff in preparing activities for participants. Must be at least 16 years old and have proof of TB test within past year.

  • This program provides a nutritious, ethnic meal to seniors age 60 and over, Monday through Friday at Yu-Ai Kai. Volunteers are needed to answer telephones and take reservations, prepare meals in the kitchen, set tables, serve meals to senior participants, and clean-up.

  • Yu-Ai Kai has a Japanese library open to the community at large. Anyone may come in and borrow books, free of charge. Volunteers are needed to help with sorting through book donations, and shelving returned books. Must be able to read Japanese.

  • Staff at Yu-Ai Kai and Akiyama Wellness Center are always in need of a person who can assist in filing papers, preparing large mailings, and a variety of other tasks. Also in need are volunteers with specific skills in graphic design, web searches, building maintenance, etc.

  • One of the most active and informative places in the agency is the Front Desk. Volunteers answer phones and greet visitors at the front desks of both Yu-Ai Kai and Akiyama Wellness Center. Volunteers are needed during the lunch hour (12 noon – 1pm) and during other operational hours.

  • Join this group of environmentally minded seniors! Volunteers help collect, sort, flatten and roll donated newspapers to be sold to florists. All proceeds benefit Yu-Ai Kai; last year, they raised almost $12,000 for the agency! Newspaper rolling and sorting is currently at Akiyama Wellness Center on Monday’s and Wednesday’s from 9:30am to 11:30am. However, meeting is tentative to having enough newspaper to work on. Please contact Cheryl Butsuda at Akiyama Wellness Center, (408) 753-9283, to confirm that Newspaper is meeting.

  • During certain times of the year, more volunteers are needed to assist in certain activities for Yu-Ai Kai. As a volunteer, you can help with setting up for the bi-monthly birthday parties, Health Fair, End of the Year parties, or fundraisers.
